SOUND DESIGNS

The word 'Sound system' is a very broad term and covers a huge range of audio products and systems

Here are a few of the different types of 'Sound system' we offer : -

  • Public Address
  • Background Music
  • Foreground Music
  • Communications Systems
  • High Quality Vocal Systems
  • Vision Accompaniment Systems

Public Address Systems

Public address systems can be further split down to different, quite defined categories such as basic paging,
multi-zone, Voice alarm, emergency etc

Public Address Case Study

Among our client base, we are fortunate to partner both our local football and rugby teams. We were requested to take on maintenance of the systems and in both cases, make repairs and corrections to ensure the systems perform as expected.

We also began a programme of identifying and documenting all components and parts of the two systems. This ensures that both the client and our engineers have easy access to documentation that details all equipment on site, holds records of all maintenance actions and records every engineering visit to site.

Background Music Systems

Background music systems are used to provide a level of entertainment and practical use that is not too intrusive,
while at the same time capable of producing sound levels able to overcome ambient background noises.

Often paging services are incorporated into background music systems to allow announcements to be made.

A common choice of loudspeaker for background music are flush ceiling mounted loudspeakers, these are capable of
producing more than adequate sound levels, while remaining discrete and space efficient.

Background Music System Case Study

We were approached by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, to provide a system for their multi-use rooms used for hire by a variety of outside groups.

Part of the installation, was a background music system. This was to be integrated into a new vision system.

High quality ceiling loudspeakers were chosen for their low profile design and high performance levels. A two zone system was installed allowing multiple sources to be played in the two areas, together with wired and wireless microphones for use as speech aids when the rooms are used for training sessions or presentations.

There was a particular need for simplicity with this system design because the rooms would be hired to external groups with the possibility that operators of the system might have little or no knowledge of audio-visual systems.

To achieve this, we combined as many of the components together as possible and also chose a mixer amplifier that functions in much the same way as a domestic 'Hifi' amplifier, this gave the best possible chance to people with limited experience.

Aswell as specifying equipment that is simple to operate, we ensured that all controls of the system were clearly labelled and provided wall mounted user guides that instructed users on the main functions and controls of the system.

Foreground Music Systems

Foreground music systems employ larger more powerful equipment, to allow them to generate much higher sound levels.

Loudspeakers are generally of the cabinet design as these are usually capable of handling much higher power levels.
Typical foreground music systems could be employed in public bars, night clubs, restaurants, conference centres etc.

Foreground Music Case Study

We were recently contracted to completely update and replace a touring sound system for a well known celebrity in London.

The requirements of the contract were to provide high quality, high power audio, yet reduce the physical size of the system to fit into a smaller touring vehicle.

The existing system was taken in part exchange and a complete system was designed, built and delivered. This included new loudspeakers, fully custom built control and amplification racks and various smaller components such as wireless microphone systems and power distribution systems.

Communications Systems

A communication system can be one, or two-way audio, they are generally designed for multiple locations to
have an audio connection to eachother.

Communications systems can vary from a single station door entry system, to multi-zone, multi-site systems
employing the very latest in audio and connection technology.

Typical connection formats can include dedicated protocol communications, standard format audio signals,
wireless technology (both un-secured and encrypted), audio-over-IP, even audio embedded into mains wiring is possible!

High Quality Vocal Systems

An example of a high quality vocal system is a Bingo hall, where clarity of speech is crucial to the success of the business.
There is also potential financial implications, should the speech quality be poor enough for number calls to be miss-interpreted.

For examples such as this, it is critical that the correct mix of equipment is chosen and the installation is very careflully carried out.
Most importantly though, the set-up, commissioning and user training must be done extremely thoroughly.
At Sound Designs, we go to great lengths to ensure that each system we provide performs exactly as it is designed to do
by meticulously planning the whole process of design and implementation.

Vision Accompaniment Systems

Vision accompaniment systems can span many of the above mentioned sound systems.
Generally the system design will form one of the above types, however it will usually have a primary
or even sometimes a dedicated purpose of providing sound for a display, or vision system.

Vision Accompaniment Case Study 1

We were contracted by a police force client to provide a large scale display and audio-visual system, The main details of this can be found in the Vision section of this site, however, part of the design was a vision accompaniment system. This was a fairly basic design and consisted of flush ceiling mounted loudspeakers mounted adjacent to each display device. Each pair of loudspeakers had its own dedicated content fed via amplifiers, from an audio-visual matrix switcher.

Vision Accompaniment Case Study 2

We have just been awarded a contract to design, supply and commission an audio-visual system at a stately home/conference venue.

This forms part of a larger building contract to provide new facilities at the site for conference events, weddings and entertainment etc.

Part of the contract is to design a cinema system including high specification video projection and a full surround sound system.

We specified a 5.1 surround sound loudspeaker system by Mordaunt Short.

These loudspeakers are visually stunning and have a performance to match
